What is Magnet? Magnet is the highest level of recognition that the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) can award to organized nursing services in the national and international arena. It is recognized as a reflection of excellence in all hospital disciplines. Why is Magnet important? It is an external validation of the excellence of an institution as a whole. Magnet elevates the profession of nursing and other disciplines within the healthcare community. Magnet recognizes nursing-sensitive outcomes as a predictor of quality of patient care and values the retention and recruitment of highly competent healthcare providers. Important Magnet Dates: 1981 American Academy of Nursing task force creade: studied 163 hospitals, of these 41 were found to be "Magent hospitals" based on 14 forces of Magnetism 1983 Research published as, "Magnet Hospitals: Attraction and Retention of Professional Nurses" 1990 ANCC established formal program 1994 University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle became the 1st Magnet Hospital (our original "Magnet Mentoring" hospital) 1999 ANMC began its first steps towards Magnet designation 2003 ANMC became: The 71st Magnet Hospital in the nation! The 1st Magnet hospital in Alaska! The 1st tribally managed Magnet hospital!
