Rotation Information

undefinedEach year several residents and motivated medical students come to learn emergency medicine in the ED at ANMC.  We host residents from the Alaska Family Practice Residency as well as those looking for an away elective.  If you are interested in rotating with us, please contact the ANMC or Indian Health Service (IHS) Student/Resident Recruiter.  The main number for ANMC is 907-563-2662.

The Rotation

Most residents and students choose to rotate for one month, although this is flexible. You will work 16-18 shifts alongside experienced, board-certified emergency physicians and be given the chance to evaluate, work-up, and treat a wide-range of patients under careful supervision. There is also a chance to do ride-alongs with Aeromed, the fixed-wing service that transports most of our patients from rural Alaska.

Attending physicians will give on-the-job didactic teaching as well as eight lectures throughout the month. You will be included in our "X-ray Conference," held each six weeks to discuss recent interesting cases (in conjunction with the radiology department) and Morbidity and Mortality Conferences. You will be expected to read several provided articles and complete an end-of-rotation exam. Your evaluation will be based on both clinical work as well as exam performance.

Housing, Transportation

Unfortunately, ANMC cannot provide housing or airfare for rotating students/residents. Past students have stayed with friends and/or relatives, with our staff, at hostels, at University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA) dormitories, and even at rooms they have rented by the month (in hotels or in private homes).  A bike, bus pass, or rented car may also be necessary, depending on where you stay. Please contact the Student Coordinator at ANMC (Edna Bolton, enbolton@anmc.org) if you need more information.
